Outside Sales Representative - Route Sales

Department: Direct Sales and Support

Direct supervisorRoute Sales Team Lead

As an Outside Sales Representative - Route Sales, you are responsible for the profitable sales of Tekton tools in a given sales territory.

There are three main facets to this job:

  • 1. Operate a large, company-owned truck. The truck serves as our store on wheels. You must drive it to make weekly sales calls to businesses whose employees purchase their own hand tools. Many, but not all, of the types of businesses you make sales calls to are automotive repair, car dealerships, heavy duty truck repair, heavy equipment repair, factory maintenance departments, and aviation repair.

  • 2. Conduct sales calls. You will meet with technicians or mechanics on a weekly schedule but will also approach the manager and owners on a less frequent but regular basis. It is expected that you meet and eventually exceed a set weekly sales volume.

  • 3. Collect payment. You will be responsible for the weekly collection of accounts receivables from customers who choose to take advantage of Tekton’s payment plan. You must be strict about collecting the weekly payment as agreed upon by the customer at the time of the sale. There will be times when you must use extra effort to enforce that agreement.

Values and skills

  • You must have exceptional values, including honesty, integrity, and empathy. A very high capacity for learning, a commitment to excellence, and high energy are essential to success. You must also have:
  • An enthusiastic and driven personality. You will work alone and must be self-motivated with an admirable work ethic. You need determination to make repeat sales calls. You also must be able to push through occasional disappointment and fatigue when visiting businesses who may not yet be buying a significant quantity.
  • Good communication skills. You need to be an excellent listener and observer, who can direct a conversation to the desired end of presenting and selling Tekton products. We do not hire professional visitors. The intent is always to establish relationships and sell tools in a professional manner.
  • The ability to be kind and firm. It takes both kindness and firmness to sell our products. You must be able to sell at the set profit margin, collect payment from our customers, and truly value customers as people instead of as just a commodity.
  • Confidence. You need to be comfortable approaching managers and owners with the intention of selling Tekton products to the business, as well as to the individual employees.

Education, experience, and qualifications

  • You do not need a specific degree or job history, but previous sales experience and a familiarity with professional hand tool use could be helpful. You must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Location and hours

  • This is a full-time salaried plus commission position located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This position requires long hours, sometimes into the evening.

About the department

  • The Direct Sales and Support department manages the experiences users have with the Tekton brand and maintains our industry-leading reputation for impressive support. Behind the scenes, this team is also responsible for ensuring our point-of-sale systems run smoothly at events, schools, and on the Tekton Truck.
